DR. HARVEY R. MANES, MD

THE MANES PEACE PRIZE

The Bible teaches “Charity is equal to all the other commandments combined”. — Winston Churchill stated “You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.” — Andrew Carnegie once said “You should spend the first half of your life making money and the second half of your life giving it away.” — Hillel, many centuries ago is quoted as saying, “If I am only for myself, what am I? And if not now, when?”

As a second-century sage said: “It is not your responsibility to finish the work (of perfecting the world), but you are not free to desist from it either”. “Life’s most urgent question, WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR OTHERS”. said by Martin Luther King, Jr.

Warren Buffet stated, “I am just giving back surplus that has no value to me but can do a lot for others”. Personally, I have always believed and taught my children that the purpose of life was to help those in need and to make the world a better place for future generations. If that was not the purpose of life then at least it gives one’s life a purpose. Recently, I read a news article about a friend of mine, who developed a charity to help educate children in third world countries. The article inspired me to create my own charity. Bill Gates had difficulty deciding where to donate his money and stated, “It may be harder to give my money away than it was to make it”. After thoughtful consideration, I decided there is no better goal than to promote peace and good will. The next step was to figure out how to best accomplish this goal.

The renowned Nobel Peace Prize, awards its prize to a person from any country in the world. It lost some of its credibility when it gave the award to the renowned terrorist and enemy of Israel, Yassar Arafat. More recently the prize has been described as “hopelessly politicized” by a former U.N. ambassador. Since there is also an Irish- American Peace Prize and an African-American Peace prize, why not establish a peace prize that is specifically given to any American individual or organization that does the most to promote peace and goodwill in the world. Apparently, the concept of an American peace prize was previously considered in 1923 by Ed Bok, the wealthy editor and originator of Ladies Home Journal. However, there is no record of any individual ever winning his prize. Therefore, I thought it would be appropriate to re-establish the concept of a peace prize given exclusively to an American.

Beyond a certain point, money has no further value. It can’t buy happiness, but it can help others and transform lives.

The MANES PEACE PRIZE FOUNDATION awards money to individuals and  organizations in the U.S. that is doing an outstanding job at establishing and promoting peace and good will between nations, races, religions, health, education or welfare.  Any person or organization doing more than their fair share at bettering the world is genuinely rewarded by Dr. Manes.

Manes Fine Arts Award

The Manes Peace Prize Foundation is pleased to offer an opportunity to your art students by creating a new program that will acknowledge those students who are artistically talented and are considering a career as an artist. The MPP Foundation will begin to offer these special students in your school the opportunity to receive a $1000 award (Manes Fine Arts Award) for a work of art (painting, drawing, sculpture) that they have created.

Each participating high school in Nassau County should pick 3 art students to receive the award. Your art department can decide how to pick the winning students. I suggest the awards be given during the time other awards are presented, possibly at graduation. In addition, the winners will then have their work of art displayed at the Nassau County Museum of Art and participate in another opportunity to win a $5000 scholarship in a juried exhibition at the Museum.

Please let me know if your school would like to participate in this new and exciting awards program that will be offered on a annual basis for young artists.

Sincerely yours,

Harvey R. Manes, M.D., Esq.

President

    ABOUT HARVEY

Dr. Harvey Manes decided to become a doctor at an at age 15 after he underwent surgery on his knee. Receiving his M.D. from Downstate Medical School, Manes then went to Kings County Hospital at Downstate Medical Center for his residency in Orthopedic Surgery. For over forty years he was a clinical instructor of Orthopedic Surgery and taught surgery to numerous resident physicians at Nassau County University Hospital. He also served as a team physician at both the University and High School levels.

Today, Dr. Manes maintains his own orthopedic and physical therapy practice, serving the Long Island community. He is a master in his trade, and has often been noted as a pioneer in joint replacement surgery—earning him TV and radio recognition. Throughout his countless published articles and his creation of the Total Orthopedic Pain Relief Cream, he has become a huge success within his field.

Dr. Manes, at age 50,  decided to add yet another degree to his repertoire. He earned his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law, where he also won the N.Y.S. Bar Ass. Student Writing Competition with his dissertation on “The Law Regarding  Art Theft and Fraud”. His deep-rooted passion for art collecting  became obvious when he earned this degree. Manes is also currently on the Board of Nassau County’s Museum of Art. Dr. Manes’ established the Foundation in 2007.  MAPP awards money to individuals and  organizations in the U.S. that is doing an outstanding job at establishing and promoting peace and good will between nations, races, religions, health, education or welfare.  Any person or organization doing more than their fair share at bettering the world is genuinely rewarded by Dr. Manes.
